It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Papa, Norman Fergus Command, age 77, of Castlegar, BC.
Norm was born on August 19th, 1940 in Dorset, Ontario. He passed the same day, August 19th, 2017, with his loving family at his side, in Castlegar, BC. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle to his family.
Norm married his wife of 57 years , Joan, on May 7th, 1960 in Kaslo. They had their first three children there, and moved to Nelson in 1967, so he could attend welding school . In 1969, after school and the fourth and final baby, they moved their family to Revelstoke for a short time, until they could all move to Mica Creek, where he had his first welding job working on the Mica Creek Dam project. The family made many memories and lifelong friends there as active members of the Swim Club, Snowmobile Club and Ski Hill. Upon completion of the dam project, they packed up their family and moved to Castlegar , where they purchased a house and made the area their home.
Throughout his life, Norm enjoyed golfing, curling, baseball, watching hockey, and fishing. He especially enjoyed ocean fishing in Winter Harbour, catching Halibut and Salmon to bring home and have fish feeds with the family.
Norm is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan, along with their four children; Dwayne, Wanita (Norm), Lisa (Mike) and Jana (Dan) ;10 grandchildren, Danielle (Brad), Dustin (Katie), Ryan (Kelsey), Kelsey (David), Travis, Jillian (Justin), Taylor (Ashley), Kailie (Trent), Zachary and Mason; 6 Great Grandchildren, Alycia, Angelina, Kayla, Grayson, Corbin, and Brielle. He will be missed by his sisters, Judy (Adrian), Mary-Ann (Neil), Isabel, and Nancy, and his many nieces and nephews and their extended families. He was pre-deceased by his brothers, Harold and John.
Norm also had a large circle of close friends who will miss him dearly. A quick trip to town for Papa was never quick, as he would inevitably run into a few of his many friends, and always made a few new ones along the way.
A celebration of life will take place on September 23rd in Castlegar , at the Kinnaird Hall, 2320 Columbia Ave, from 1-3 pm. Please wear your best and brightest clothes and bring your best stories. We will share our love and laughter in remembering our wonderful Papa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a charity very near and dear to his heart, The Kidney Foundation of BC-Yukon, in his name, in honour of his grandson, Zachary Tremblay, who has been battling this disease since birth.
The family would also like to send a heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Larocque for his incredibly compassionate care of Papa. We would also like to thank Dr. Bbandama Makwati and nurse Jenny Benner, at the Castlegar Health Center for the compassion shown to our Dad and to our family.
Your kindness will never be forgotten.
Rest peacefully Papa. We will miss you, but we know you are pain free, breathing freely, and walking your best buddy Pazzer on your favourite trails, and giving everyone “the gears”, as only you could.
We’ll see you in the funny papers…
