Emma Kavaloff

Emma Kavaloff our wonderful mom, passed away in Castleview Care Center. She was the only daughter of four children to Tina and Sam Kalesnikoff.

Mom had a happy childhood in Champion Creek and often talked about her adventures there. She worked in her dad’s Logging camp as a cook and often remarked about how much those men could put away.

She married John Kavaloff in May 1952. John built her a home in Blueberry Creek where they raised their five children, Shirley, Clara (Greg), Wanda, Emily (Doug), and John (Val).

Mom loved to sew and spent many years making garments for choirs, weddings and “going away” suits. She said it wasn’t work because she loved sewing so much. Mom loved her flower garden and she also had a magnificent vegetable garden which kept them going through lean times.

Mom and Dad shared the love of singing and were members of several Russian choirs.

Mom is also remembered for her borscht and pyrahi when she cooked for her brother Sam’s business the Blue Top Burger.

When she was in her late forties she went back to school. Schooling was not easy to get at Champion Creek in the 1940’s and she always wanted to know what her children were learning and often would help them with their school math. She earned top marks and achieved grade 10.

In later years she spent a lot of time with her grandchildren Jason (Jill), Rob (Allysha), Vanessa (Rob), Sean, Jesse (Lisa) and great grand-daughter Talia. Mom continued to sew and Garden until close to the end of her days.

Mom is predeceased by her husband John in 2017.

Many thanks to the care teams at Castleview Care Center and Dr. Vasil for their compassionate care and support.

There will be a service held at New Life Church, 602-7th Street, Castlegar, Monday, April 15, 2019 at 10:30am, followed by interment at Brilliant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to ISKRA would be appreciated.

Castlegar Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

To Emma’s family. We got to know Emma while visiting our Mother at Castleview. We loved to see her smile when we would ask her where her pink hat was or compliment her when she was wearing it. We would have loved to know her when she was younger too.
