It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Fred Tomilin, our Dad, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and partner who passed away peacefully on March 19, 2020 in Castlegar, BC.

Fred was born on July 15, 1928 in Ootischenia, BC to Mike and Annie Tomilin. He was predeceased by his wife Anita in 2009 and his daughter-in-law, Denise in 2012.

Fred is survived by: son Fred Tomlin of Merritt, daughter Carol (John) Gleave of Castlegar, son Gerry (Joanie) Tomilin of Fruitvale, BC. Grandchildren: Hilary (Graham) Fedorak of Salt Lake City, Dylan(Kristen) Tomlin of Kelowna, BC, Aron(Kristine) Gleave of West Kelowna, Trina(Rick) Heppner of Genelle, BC, Niki and Breanna Tomilin of Fruitvale, BC. And Great Grandchildren: Katrina and Arianna Fedorak of Salt Lake City, Utah; Anna and Kaley Gleave of West Kelowna, BC; Sahara, Hudson, and Destiny Heppner of Genelle, BC. Also being left behind is Marion Demosky, his loving companion.

Fred was a lifetime member of the USCC and participated in most of the functions of the community. Fred loved to sing and was a member of many choirs through his lifetime. Some of note were the Kootenay Men’s Choir, the Expo 67 Choir, the Tri Choir and the Kootenay Psalmists. Though Fred left school at grade 6, he managed to achieve the designation of journeyman machinist at Cominco Operations in Trail BC. Fred loved to do woodwork and putter in the garden, growing some of the most amazing tomatoes. Fred also enjoyed his time at the cabin at Christina Lake where he served on the Board for a number of years. Fred always welcomed the time he had with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren telling them stories and at times simply spoiling them!

A private funeral will be at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel with a Doukhobor Burial at the Kinnaird Cemetery on March 24, 2020. A “Celebration of Life” Molenya will be held at a later date.

Bill Strilaeff of Castlegar Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence by visiting the family’s register at www.castlegarfuneral.com [1] .

The Family would like to thank the dedicated group of nurses, doctors and staff at both the Trail and District Regional Hospital and Talarico Place for their outstanding care of our father.

               Lord, Give Us Thy Blessing

Our haven of refuge, that giveth us blessings, is our trust in God.

In this sacred trust, Christ Himself dwelleth, and His Holy Spirit is

Ever on guard. In all our undertakings may God be with us.

                                                                           Our God Be Praised

Dad you were a gentle, kind, compassionate, hard working man and someone we all looked up to. We hope to grow to be just like you! All our Love and may you Rest in Peace!

Condolences for the family of “Fred Mike Tomilin”

Condolence from J Hardy on March 23rd, 2020 4:36 pm

Although, at such a time as this, there’s little one can do, I hope it helps in some small way to know we are thinking of you and your families. Fred was an amazing man and will be remembered by Sid and I forever.

Condolence from Paul Witt on March 23rd, 2020 4:36 pm

I had the pleasure of spending time with Fred only a few times. However, from the 1st time that I met him during a visit to Castlegar on the Thanksgiving weekend of 2018, it felt like he had been a friend for years. Whenever he entered the room, people would engage with him, as he definitely had charisma. Kind and humble, yet so appreciative of the life that he lived, he was always ready with a story to tell. And since he had such an interesting life, he certainly had a good number of stories and memories to share, often with a good dose of humour thrown in. He had a twinkle in his eye and a ready smile, especially when he was in the presence of Marion, his companion for the past 11 years. I must admit to having taken up his habit of doing “the kind of planning you do in an easy chair with your eyes closed”, so my memories of Fred will last forever. At this sad time, my deepest sympathy goes out to your family and Fred’s “adopted” family, the Demoskys. Cherish the memories of a life well lived.

It is with great sadness that we heard about the passing of Fred! He was a wonderful neighbour, friend and honorary Grandpa to our daughter Tiffany! He will be greatly missed by all. God Bless You All at this sad time. He was so proud of his family and loved to talk about all of you when we met at Safeway.

Condolence from Ron Horlick on April 7th, 2020 8:15 am

I was saddened to hear of Fred’s passing. I worked with Fred for many years in the Cominco (Teck) machine shop. Fred was a great guy, very respected, and just a kind and friendly person to be with, and a great friend.
