A community pillar has fallen – Joseph Charles “Leo” Plamondon born July 31, 1939 in Lac La Biche, AB passed away peacefully on March 31, 2020 at Castleview Care Centre in Castlegar, BC. This caring and gentle man is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Mabel and her family (Valarie Griffiths, Fred Soukoroff, Caroline Barabonow and Lavern Humphrey and their respective families). Leo is also survived by his brother Roger and three sisters Lee Tona, Bernie Piccolo and Carol Drinnan and their respective families. Leo is predeceased by his parents Fred and Mary and his brother Raymond.

He  had many good friends over the years one being the late Bill Salekin whom Leo worked with, traveled with and passed many an evening with. And also his long-time friend and community partner Bob Sorenson. Very rarely would you find Leo without Bob.

Leo was proud to be a citizen of Castlegar and took great pleasure in providing service to the community whether through the Castlegar-Selkirk Lions Club, CNIB, Rota Villa or just being a friend, grandparent and member of the community. Leo held many positions within the Lions club and was a proud recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship award.

Leo grew up in the Trail and Fruitvale areas and later moved to Castlegar. Leo will be remembered for his humor and kindness in the many roles he had with the school district as bus driver, custodian, driver trainer and mailman to name a few. He also was the first president of CUPE Local 1298 in Castlegar.

Leo and Mabel spent many weekends camping with friends and grandkids when they weren’t at Trade Fairs, Sunfest events, Pumping Gas for Kids, Spring Fling, and so on.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  The family would like to thank everyone for all the messages and phone calls and request that everyone stay safe, look after one another and be kind. Always.

Mabel and the family would also like to thank Dr. Ankenbauer and all the staff at the Castleview Care Centre for taking such good care of our Leo.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in Leo’s memory may do so to Easter Seals House or the CNIB Foundation, BC & Yukon.

Castlegar Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.  Cremation has taken place.
