It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mickey Kinakin of Thrums, BC on February 9th, 2020.
Mickey was born on December 7th, 1950 in Nelson, BC to parents William and Alice.
At an early age, the family moved to Rutland, BC where Mickey attended school. Mickey decided to pursue further education and moved to Castlegar, BC to attend Selkirk College. Upon completion of his studies Mickey began working for Selkirk College, where he worked in various positions including the maintenance department, the library, and finally as an OH&S Officer.
Community, child welfare, and education were all very important to Mickey. He spent 31 years serving as trustee on the local school board. Mickey was a strong supporter of language immersion programs, in particular, the Russian program. In recognition of his many years of service he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012.
Mickey was predeceased by his father William in 1970, his mother Alice in 1995, and his brother Harry in 2009. Mickey is survived by his wife Adriana, daughters Varenka (Michael), Natalia (Dave), sons Darren (Michael-Ann), Yuri (Carla), Max (Emily), siblings Bill (Virginia) and Nettie (George), many nieces and nephews, and countless friends. Mickey’s favorite part of his legacy were his grandchildren Lucy, Wendy, Sofia, and Julia.
The family would like to thank Dr. Smart and all the staff from the home support group for all of the wonderful care they provided to Mickey throughout his illness. As well, the Castlegar Funeral Chapel for their assistance.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. He will be greatly missed by his family and community and will always be in our hearts.
If you wish please call 250-365-7201 to make a donation in his name to the Blueberry Creek Community School, in which he played an instrumental role in its continued existence.

Mickey Kinakin was a great teacher. He cared about everyone and everything. He always put everyone else before himself. I never personally had him as a teacher but I knew him very well from the college, always saying hi to everyone, always smiling. Anyways he will be deeply missed. Thank you for being you Mickey Kinakin, and my condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to read about Mickey’s passing. I worked with Mickey at Selkirk College and in the union in the mid-late 70s and early 80s. I had great respect for his caring and compassionate nature along with his ability to negotiate. We met a few times in Kelowna at the Starbucks in Rutland and it was always a great conversation. Please accept my condolences for your loss.
