Nick Voikin

April 20, 1926 to October 6, 2018

Nick passed away peacefully in Trail Hospital on Saturday, October 6th, 2018.

Nick was born April 20, 1926 in Ootischenia, British Columbia, to parents Mike and Avdotia Voikin. Nick is survived by his three daughters Tanya, Lorna and Diana and their respective husbands Alex and Chris and his grandchildren Joshua, Natasha, Chelsea, James, Wyatt and Zara.

Nick was a member of the CCUB and was a lifetime member of its successor, the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ.

Nick worked as a successful building contractor and architectural draftsman until his retirement at age 72 from HA Simons International. His legacy is several buildings he designed which are still in service today including Oglow’s (Now Andersons Insurance) and Pharmasave in Castlegar. Several of his other designs and buildings still stand in Rossland, Trail, Castlegar, Vancouver and Sydney (Australia).

In 1956 Nick was invited to join the Jaycees in Nelson. This commenced a 10-year period of active Jaycee service during which Nick achieved great success being named Jaycee of the Year (Trail) in 1960 and Outstanding District President in 1962. He was awarded a lifelong Senatorship in 1962 in honour of his outstanding service and achievements.

Nick was a passionate golfer earning the nickname of ‘The Roadrunner’ due to his speed in completing 18 holes of golf, a sport he only discovered in his 50’s and enjoyed into his 90s.

Nick was one of a kind. He remained sharp minded and independent until the end remaining in his own home, actively following world news and sharing his deep love and knowledge of historical events. His crystal-clear memory educated many of not only the Doukhobor heritage and history of the area but also of world politics and events.  It has been said that the incredible detail in his recounts helped change history from black and white to a beautiful coloured photograph.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 17th, 2018 10:00 am at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. Everyone is welcome to attend.

There will be viewing on October 16th, 2:30 pm at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel.
