In Loving Memory of Richard William Armstrong

With heavy hearts the Armstrong family announces the passing of Rick Armstrong on August 24, 2021 in his 68th year, at Trail Regional Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Donna; his 5 children, Rob Armstrong (Natasha), Jennifer Marcotte (Jeremy), Daniel Armstrong (Wendy), Erik Armstrong (Michelle), and Mari Bodden (Sam); his 4 brothers and 2 sisters and their families; and will be dearly missed by his 10 (and counting) grandchildren; and many more who loved him.

Rick was born on July 11, 1953 in Revelstoke, to Dr. William Armstrong and Mrs. Therese Armstrong (both now deceased). He grew up in Revelstoke and Rossland where he excelled at sports, especially track-and-field and basketball. After many moves, one for each of his 5 kids, the family finally settled in Castlegar where he spent the last 35 years. Rick’s family was everything to him and he always showed up. He passed on his love of sports to his own kids and was often found on the sidelines of a basketball or softball game, cheering them on, or even coaching them, should the league need him. This was true for his grandkids as well, and he was so proud of all of them. Rick was a fisherman, an outdoor enthusiast, a phenomenal bread baker, a chocolate cake maker/connoisseur, and a fighter to the end.

Despite the many challenges Rick faced, he never complained, and he always found a way to make a joke. He will be remembered for his excellent (and sometimes hilariously crass) sense of humour in every situation, as well as his incredible strength, resilience, and humility. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him well.

The Armstrong family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the many doctors and nurses at Kelowna General Hospital and Trail Regional Hospital, as well as the BC Air Ambulance for all the excellent, life-saving care Rick received over the past 5+ years. They are eternally grateful for the extra time and memories they got to have with Rick.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and an immediate-family-only memorial service will be held in Castlegar on August 30, 2021, with a BBQ celebration to follow, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Lung Association are appreciated by the family, perhaps with a nice piece of chocolate in hand, in Rick’s honour.

Condolences for the family of “Rick Armstrong”

Condolence from Hansi Liu-Atkinson on August 31st, 2021 11:12 am

My family and I are extremely saddened to hear of your enormous loss. I feel extremely fortunate to have known Mr. Armstrong and will always remember his warmth, his sense of humour, and his dedication to his family. I am deeply grateful for his generosity and how he always treated me like family and opened his home and heart (and his amazing cooking that is absolutely unmatched) while asking nothing in return. We are thinking of him and his family during this difficult time.

Rick makes an appearance in a large part of my memories growing up – from countless dinners with the Armstrong family to many days supporting us on the ball field. He really cared; his kindness paralleled only by his love for chocolate.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate the positive impact you had on my life.

Condolence from Shelley, Duane Young and family on August 31st, 2021 7:16 pm

I don’t have the right words to describe how I am feeling or how to send my condolences to you Wendy Armstrong, Dan Armstrong, Donna Davis Armstrong and family (Rob, Jennifer, Erik and Mari) . I am so honoured to have been able to know Rick and have shared the times we all have spent with him. I remember great adventures, amazing teachings and long heart felt conversations. Dinners with amazing home baked bread, desserts, game nights and laughs so hard my face hurt the next morning. I know you all have many more memories and experiences, I’m so glad I was blessed to have had just a fraction. I’m so sorry Rick needed to go so soon and I hope with all my heart you find peace in your memories and hold on to them, talk about them, remember them and cherish each and every one of them. Thinking of you all and sending our deepest condolences.

Condolence from Ruth Tkachyk on September 1st, 2021 8:08 pm

My sincere condolences to Donna and the entire family. I had the great pleasure to meet Rick for the first time at Christina Lake a couple of years ago – after hearing about him over the years from Glen and Mary. His sense of humour and gentle demeanour made a lasting impression – not to mention the exquisite chocolate torte that he brought as an offering! It was eminently clear that his family was his lifeblood.

Condolence from Derek Todd on September 3rd, 2021 8:43 am

I am so grateful that Rick had the extraordinary resilience to survive his terrible medical emergency and could thus be with his family for the time he was given. I have always felt that children can never have too many grandparents and having shared that role with him for four of his grandchildren I am acutely conscious of the loss to them and of course to all his children, grandchildren, Donna and his brothers and sisters and their families. In the days after his passing people show their love and solidarity and there will be more days and then weeks, months and years and he will still be gone. May our love and support be refreshed by the memories and by the task we share to live happy loving lives in the example Rick set for us all.
